At Suryaside Yoga, we know that people are not perfect. That is why we believe in Practicing Humanity. By developing a yogic mindfulness practice, you can equip yourself with the tools you need to practice matching your actions to the intentions of the Self.
Through a study of Asana, Pranayama, Meditation, Subtle Body, Yogic Philosophy, Aryuveda, Restorative Yoga, Trauma Informed Yoga Practice, Prenatal, Hands-n Adjustments, and more.
New this year, we are partnering with Joy Liberation Collective, and sharing their "Mindful Changemakers" program to help folks understand their role in oppressive systems and explore the way they care for themselves and others through mindfulness.
This will be a unique experience led by loving, mindful Suryaside Yoga teachers like Roque, Rodriguez, Yuuki Hirano, and many of your other Suryaside favorites with guest lectures by experts in their field.
Deepen your yoga practice, your connection to your Self, and to the world around you by finding community in this deeply transformative experience.

Variety of lineages and teaching perspectives
We believe in the richness of many lineages and varieties of teachings. "Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is specifically your own." - Bruce Lee
Prepared to teach different bodies, ages and in various environments
Yoga isn't just for healthy, skinny, flexible youth, yoga is for anyone that can breathe and is conscious of their thought. We emphasize the importance of being able to teach people not poses.
Personal attention
Mentorship and guidance is an integral part of this journey. We strive to create a safe and nurturing environment and space in the training and for the collective of the students to be able to support each other.
In depth self study/inquiry
The only way to know oneself is to ask, to ponder, to be curious and sometimes be willing to shake things on its head. We will be here to guide the inquiries and journey into the self, wherever and whatever that may be.
Confidence building: practice teaching / vocal practice
Your voice is your power. Through the training we will encourage you to find your voice and your inner resolve and strength through practice teaching and other goal exercises.
We teach people not poses
We are adamant about working with the individual, even if it is a group setting. Our emphasis is on educating and understanding the intention and benefit of the pose rather than pretzling into some arbitrary shape.
Led and supported by the teachers of the Suryaside community
This training is composed of many of the staff and teachers at the Suryaside Yoga studio which gives you the opportunity to connect and be part of the greater studio community and have the ongoing support of the teachers and fellow students.

“Suryaside Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) was life-changing for me.”
“It began with my love of practicing at the studio as a student. From the moment Suryaside opened, a community planted itself and grew, and I was thrilled to grow with it. As I became a regular, my personal practice expanded and deepened, I started counting the faculty, staff and fellow yogis among my friends, and when Suryaside decided to offer its first-ever Teacher Training, I signed right up—and was not disappointed. The program is rigorous and absolutely top-notch, with a comprehensive curriculum; amazing guest instructors from within and beyond the Suryaside community; unparalleled personal attention and feedback; plenty of practice teaching; and even practical guidance on starting a yoga career and running a yoga-centric business. What was most amazing about the training was that it was applicable to leadership in all forms, and I applied many of the principles that I learned to other areas of my life and work in addition to yoga. Now, more than a year later, I am honored to teach at Suryaside (and I continue to be an enthusiastic student of other teachers at the studio)! Not bad for someone who had little intention of actually teaching and just wanted to hang around the studio as much as possible! Roque Rodriguez and Yuuki Hirano, Suryaside’s co-founders and leaders of the YTT program, do everything with passion, excellence, fun, and great love, and Suryaside’s YTT program reflects that. If you’re thinking about it, go for it! You’ll have no regrets.”

Our Lead Teachers
Roque Rodriguez is the proud Co-Founder of Suryaside Yoga. He is Co-Director and Co-Lead Trainer of both the Suryaside Yoga and Hosh Yoga 200 hour Teacher Trainings.
He received his first Yoga teacher Certification from Yoga To The People in 2009 and continued his studies with the Ishta Yoga 500 Hour level course and at Jason Brown’s Anatomy For Yoga Teachers program.
Roque believes that a yoga practice is the most effective way to bring yourself, and in turn the world, in to balance. Whether it’s to become a better athlete, more successful at business, recover from an injury, or improve your relationships with others, a yoga practice can provide you the tools necessary to meet your goals and better honor your intentions. He is honored to share this practice with the world; especially people and communities who have not traditionally had access to the teachings.
Jen SanMiguel began her yogic journey the way many people do- not as a former
dancer or gymnast- but as a stressed out New Yorker looking to find some peace in the chaos of her daily life. She discovered that peace on the mat, but also uncovered a life path she didn’t know she was seeking- the path to her truest and highest self, through spiritual practice and service
Jen teaches vinyasa flow classes with an emphasis on creative sequencing and alignment. She strives to create an atmosphere that is welcoming and supportive to all ages, body types, and abilities, that is conducive to your exploration of your practice, to uncover/discover/recover your truest self. She doesn't want to change you- she wants to help you become more completely who you already are. A student once described her class as the “perfect mix of zen and hilarity”- a compliment she will treasure forever.
Jen completed her 200 hour and 300 hour advanced teaching certifications at LL Studio (formerly Laughing Lotus Yoga Center), NYC. She has additional certifications in yin, restorative and trauma-informed yoga, reiki, sound healing and is currently working toward a certificate in Katonah yoga. She is a Queens native, a mythology and astrology nerd, and a cat lady.
